BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- China is seeking promising bobsledders and skeleton sliders from many other sports in order to make a debut in the events at Winter Olympic Games.

More than 100 athletes took part in the selection held at Beijing Sports University on Tuesday. Most of them are sprinters in track and field, weightlifters, wrestlers as well as basketball, rugby and soccer players from provincial teams and colleges. Some are even from national teams.

Manuel Machata, head coach of China's newly-built bobsleigh and skeleton team, believed he had found some talents in the selection. As for how long could these athletes become competitive in top level international meetings, the former bobsledder from Germany said that he still need to judge through their training and competing.

"We can just try the best we can with our possibilities at the moment. Try to bring these athletes into the right direction," said the 32-year-old Machata, who piloted the German four-men bobsleigh team to a victory at 2011 World Championships at Konigssee, Germany.

China aims to compete in all seven sports and over 90 percent of 102 medal events at the 2022 Olympics. To reach that goal, China has set up national teams in the sports of bobsled, luge, skeleton, snowboard and ski jumping in recent years, raising the number of national winter sports teams to 22.

"In order to qualify for 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, our bobsledders and skeleton sliders need to collect as many points as they can and reach certain rankings in the upcoming North American Cup, Europe Cup and World Cup," said Hu Jie, director of luge, bobsleigh and skeleton department of the Winter Sports Management Center of China's General Administration of Sport.

"It's irrealistic to think about any good result in Pyeongchang Games, but we will definitely fight for a podium finish at Beijing Winter Games in 2022," said Hu.

BRATISLAVA , Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Russian athletes dominated on the fourth day of 27th Winter Universiade in Strbske Pleso nad Osrblie in Slovakia here on Wednesday.

Russian biathletes won all the men's 12.5 km pursuit medals. Yuri Shopin claimed the gold. Iaroslav Ivanov and Maksim Burtasov took the silver and bronze respectively.

"Today it's different from yesterday. We changed the competition and for me the gunfire was clear. I am very happy, because it's really good for my career," said Shopin.

Russian skiers also made the 10km classic race into exhibition. Andrey Feller beat his countryman Artem Nikolaev with just a 0.8 seconds difference. The bronze medal went to Valeriy Gontar, who finished 10.1 seconds after the winner.

"The race was full of strong opponents and I sticked to the fastest ones, what helped me to reach the best final time ," said Feller.

Russia also won gold in the women's biathlon and 5km cross-country skiing.

ROME, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A recent investigative report carried out by ANSA news agency has highlighted the emergency of growing violence in clashes between supporters and police at Italian football matches.

In the 20132014 football season, ANSA found, injuries occurred during professional matches registered a 37-percent increase compared to the previous season. The great part of clashes happened in Serie A games, marking a 35-percent growth of injured among supporters and 80-percent growth among police over the 20122013 season.

In addition , some 20 percent more of people were reported to police and 10 percent more arrested despite a reinforcement of security forces officers, who have been increased from 160,000 to 180,000.

More than 5,000 people across Italy were subjected by the so-called "Daspo ," which stands for "prohibition to participate to sports events" and allows police to precautionarily ban suspected hooligans from attending football matches.

Last month, a 28-year-old supporter of Napoli who had been shot allegedly by a Roma fan before the Italian Cup final on May 3, Ciro Esposito, died from the attack's injuries in a hospital of the Italian capital where he had been in intensive care for several weeks.

Esposito's relatives made a plea for ending violence in the Italian football. However, according to the report , the organizations of hooligans - generally known as "ultras" - have to increasingly deal with groups of "loose cannons," or violent fans acting without the organizations' approval.

These groups, which can easily plan their attacks though social medias, account for 10 percent - meaning around 4,000 people - of Italian hooligans , according to the national observatory on sports events, a body of the Italian interior ministry entrusted with advisory function.

"There is no longer a map of cheer in stadiums ... there is no control anymore, it is like the new mafias, there are too many leaders, they are too many and uncontrollable ," the head of Napoli's ultras Gennaro Di Tommaso was quoted as saying by ANSA.

"And one thing is certain. Unfortunately I do not think the story of Ciro (Esposito) is over, we have to get ready for a showdown," he added. Following the announcement of the supporter's death, police in Rome were on high alert amid worries of revenge raids by angered Napoli fans.

Local authorities have repeatedly attempted to tackle the football violence by introducing tougher measures on stadium security, from electronic tickets which allow the identification of supporters to reinforcement of Daspo. Harsh fights between fans , however, have continued to happen every week of the championship.

"We are 20 years behind compared to countries such as Germany and the UK," a football lawyer, Lorenzo Contucci, was quoted as saying by ANSA. The news agency pointed out the backwardness of Italy's stadiums compared to other European nations.
